Fire officials say a controlled burn got out of control off of Broadway at around 11 a.m. yesterday.
Fueled by thick weeds, grass and tamarisk, the fire in the Redlands scorched about 40 acres and forced the evacuation of 20 homes.
Emergency notification systems warned residents in the Preserve Subdivision area to get out.
The fire also forced the closure of Broadway for hours while crews battled the immense flames.
Several fences were damaged and although the fire burned close to several homes, none were lost.
A fire fighter suffered minor burns and fire engine suffered moderate damage when the fire surrounded it.
The fire was contained just before 2 p.m. and the families were allowed to return to their homes.
