11News was in the courtroom this morning where the family of a mother convicted of giving birth to a baby boy then leaving the child in a closet to die issued a statement to the media just prior to her sentencing.
The family of Morgan Hite says, "We are still healing from the loss of our grandson, Gabriel. We stand by our daughter and will throughout the time ahead. The Foundation we have talked about has been on hold so we could heal ourselves and our family. We will, in the near future, get back on track and hopefully make it come true for the sake of Gabriel and all the young women that may find themselves in this situation and let them know that there is an alternative. This is a tragedy that can be avoided and the need for public awareness is very much needed."
Hite faced charges of first degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. In February of last year, Hite secretly gave birth to the baby and hid it in a closet in her parents north Grand Junction home. Her parents found the infant’s body two months later. Hite faces 20 years in prison and five years mandatory probation.
