Officials say a transient camp fire may be to blame for a brush fire that tore through a Colorado River Island and surrounding areas yesterday.
The fire started after 5 p.m. on Walker Island near where 5th Street meets the river, but high winds caused it to spread quickly and jump across the river.
An old junkyard building in the area went up in flames and a nearby trailer park had to be evacuated as Grand Junction and BLM fire fighters fought the blaze. It took crews several hours to get the fire contained.
No one was injured.
Officials estimate damage at anywhere from $4,000 to $20,000.

I was talking to my girlfriend on the phone when someone came to her house and told her she had to get her things and get out because of the fire. She lives in the 1200 block of South 5th St.
