Aurora, Colo. (AP) - An 81-year-old Montrose man who was injured in a field fire last month in Olathe has died.
Montrose County Coroner Thomas Canfield says Derald Skalla died Tuesday of multi-system organ failure caused by burns. The manner of death was an accident.
Skalla was burning the ditch area along his alfalfa fields in Olathe on March 6 when high winds pushed the flames out of control. Hay and an outbuilding caught fire.
Skalla reportedly entered the outbuilding to try to save some property and suffered burns on 62 percent of his body.
He was flown to the University of Colorado's Burn Trauma Unit in the Denver-Aurora area, where he remained until his death.
