A Grand Junction man who troopers say accidentally ran over his granddaughter has been formally charged.

The DA’s office filed DUI charges this morning against 50–year–old Anthony Woods.

State Troopers say Woods had been drinking at his home and working on his Jeep last month when he backed it out of his garage and ran over 11–month–old Payton Garlick.

Woods' attorney tells 11 News it was a terrible accident that could have happened to anyone and he's glad the DA did not file more serious charges.

DUI??? Really?? How many of us that enjoy working on our own cars don't enjoy an adult beverage while we do it?? This was nothing more than a very tragic accident. Mr Woods will have to deal with his loss for the rest of his life and charging him with DUI is nothing more than Mesa County seeking to increase its bank account at his expense. Had Mr. Woods been driving on the street and had an accident then I could understand the charges. These charges are just nuts. I hope that the charges are dropped and Mr. Woods is allowed to heal.
