Colorado ties Florida for lightning strike deaths

Last year Colorado tied Florida for the most lightning fatalities in the United States with four deaths.

The last time we tied for first was back in 2006 with eight deaths.

On average, Colorado sees about three fatalities and 15 reported injuries a year.

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week the National Weather Service wants to remind you that “when thunder roars, go indoors.”

Meteorologists say it's sad that we are tied for the top spot but they believe it's because so many people enjoy Colorado's great outdoors and don't always take the caution they should.
