A public hearing is scheduled in Denver today on Xcel Energy's request for an increase in electricity rates.
The utility wants to raise rates to recover some of its costs for a coal plant, two natural gas plants, power lines and other equipment.
It initially sought to raise rates to recover about $159 million, but after negotiations with state regulators, Xcel is now seeking to recover about just over $112 million.
Xcel Energy's new proposal would raise rates for typical residential customers by about $2.94 a month and small businesses by $4.42 per month.
