The Mesa State Mavs beat Belmont Abbey Crusaders 7 -2 in the first game of the 2009 Division II Baseball National Finals.
A two-run homer by Craig Lanzarotta gave Mesa the lead after an early deficit. And a three-run home by Mike Provencher rallied Mesa State as the Mavericks scored seven unanswered runs for a first-round victory.
Mesa State starting pitcher Brent Lamaster overcame a two-run first inning and combined with relievers Garrett Carpenter and Aaron Guinn to hold Belmont Abbey scoreless the rest of the way.
Mesa State plays the Grand Valley State/Emporia State winner Monday at 5 p.m. Belmont Abbey faces the Grand Valley State/Emporia State loser Monday at 1 p.m. in the first elimination game.
