Colorado is one in only four states that does not require mandatory reporting of adult abuse and neglect.
That's why the Mesa County Department of Human Services is working to bring awareness to the issue.
This morning the county commissioners proclaimed the month of June as Adult Protection Awareness Month.
Officials say about 70 percent of victims are over the age of 60 and are physically impaired or have some form of dementia.
They are often victims of financial crimes and neglect.
Only one in six victims of adult abuse actually report it.
Officials say nearly 70 percent of the time abuse, exploitation and neglect are caused by a member of the victim's own family.
