Nearly 90 senior volunteers are being toasted and hosted Friday at an annual recognition luncheon.

St. Mary's Foster Grandparents are part of a nationwide program that allows senior citizens to use their life-experience to improve the lives of children in need.

The local program has served Mesa, Delta, and Montrose counties since 1973. Officials say 2008, volunteers provided more than 51,000 hours of service to nearly 1,500 local children.

The Senior Companion Program has been serving Mesa County since 1990. Senior companions visit other seniors on a daily basis, and help their contemporaries stay independent. They help with groceries, cleaning, and most importantly, provide socialization so that no one has to be lonely. Volunteer coordinators say that in 2008, our local senior companions befriended nearly 300 Grand Valley elderly men and women.

Both programs are always looking for volunteers. You have to be at least 55 years old to qualify. Call (979) 263-9091 to be a Foster Grandparent, and (970) 263-9092 to become a Senior Companion.
