A cleaning van caught fire at 1:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon destroying the van and burning part of a building.

The fire happened behind the Powerhouse Gym on 24 ½ Road and Patterson. Officials say a man was using the Stanley Steamer van to clean inside the gym when he smelled smoke and heard what he thought sounded like fireworks. When he came out the van was almost completely engulfed by flames.

The Powerhouse Gym was evacuated as flames burned the backside of the building. Officials say only smoke made it inside the gym. Nobody was injured in the blaze.

Damage to the gym is estimated at $5,000, the van is a complete loss at $60,000, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
