A local charity that just launched this spring says it's overwhelmed by the community support it's already received.
The Tammy D. Martin Trips, Dreams, and Memories Foundation sends families with terminally ill parents on an all expenses paid dream vacation, in hopes of giving kids a happy, lasting memory of their mom or dad.
Just two months after kicking off, foundation organizers say they've already received enough money in donations to send their first family on a trip this summer -- a feat they say they didn't think they'd be able to do until the end of the year.
The Foundation was created in honor of Tammy D. Martin, who died of cancer while her children were still young. Her family says it had been her dream to take a cruise with her kids so they could have one last good time together -- but by the time they were able to save up enough money, doctors wouldn't clear her to travel. Her family says they decided to start the foundation so other families would get the chance that Tammy never got.
"We really hope to continue to see the kind of outpouring that we've seen initially so that we can make this happen for family, after family, after family," said Teresa Black, Tammy's sister.
The Foundation says it could always use volunteers to help recruit families and to help man the booth they hope to set up during the Downtown Farmer's Market.
