A dad who had just joined a Utah search and rescue team drowned trying to save his children.

It happened at Barker Lake, 12 miles north of Escalante, Utah.

The Garfield County Sheriff's Office says 32–year–old Scott Penderson was on the lake with his five and seven year old boys.

His sons went swimming and started having trouble in the ice cold water and when Penderson jumped in to try to save them, he couldn't stay afloat.

He yelled for help and family members were able to rescue the boys but Penderson never came up again.

The St. George/Washington County Search and Rescue Dive Team recovered his body. Penderson ironically had just become a member of the same team.

Authorities say you should always wear a life jacket because mountain lakes may be a lot colder than they look and even strong swimmers can get tangled in weeds at the bottom of a lake.
