Throughout the month of July the reporters of 11 News show you what it means when we say 11 Cares.
Reporter Jessica Zartler brings you the story of Spence Bergner, a veteran who spent his life hiding his military service and veteran status, but is busy making sure our troops serving right now know they're appreciated.
"I chose this story because I was really touched hearing Spence's story," Jessica says. "To give up so much to serve our country and have to hide the fact that you served in Vietnam but still have a big enough heart to honor the soldiers currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan is amazing."
As Jessica's story will show you, tens of thousands of soldiers left their homes and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. Some of those who made it home were greeted by spitting, jeering Americans, something Bergner doesn't want any current troops to face.
"Spence may be one of the most patriotic people I've ever met and the community is lucky to have him serving our veterans," Jessica says.
