Chief is stepping down, not retiring. Says he'll be applying at other police departments around the nation.

Laurie Kadrich, city manager, is now speaking. Says she would gladly have Gardner remain as police chief until her retirement, is sorry to see him go.

Kadrich says she hopes the interim chief will be from outside the department but that there are qualified officers in the department who could become the permanent chief.

Says Gardner's resignation is unexpected.
