Another power outage on Horizon Drive is causing business owners to ask, when will it all end? It’s also causing Xcel to look at replacing an existing two mile cable.
Nanette Liverman, manager of Denny’s on Horizon Drive says when power goes out, "Everything shuts down we can't use our dishwasher, grill shuts down automatically."
Then they have to do more than just reset the clocks. "As soon as the power went out we had people, their food was in the window, and they just took off," says Liverman. And no power combined with no business, equals no money. "It’s very frustrating," says Liverman.
This isn't the first time businesses on Horizon Drive have had to deal with an outage.
11 News has reported power problems in the area since at least 2005. The most recent outages on Horizon come on the heals of a million dollar cable replacement by Xcel energy.
Fred Eggleston with Xcel Energy says, "The cable where the fault occurred today is now on the schedule to be replaced and we'll be working on that within the month." Xcel will also be looking to replace another two mile long cable that connects the power station to Horizon where the new cable is already installed. "It has to be redesigned and re-engineered and then we'll see how we want to approach repairing that cable," says Eggleston. That process could last until January of next year.
Eggleston says, "We'll get these last pieces wrapped up and we'll have a very reliable system."
Something businesses on Horizon thought they had after the first cable replacement. Liverman says, "We've already had too many outages as far as I'm concerned." And they're tired of waiting.
Friday’s power outage lasted about an hour and affected 872 customers including the Grand Junction Regional Airport.
