A darting cat may have contributed to an accident that shut down 31 1/2 Road in Clifton overnight.

According to the Colorado State Patrol a 28-year-old Grand Junction woman was headed southbound on 31 1/2 Road south of I-70B when she says she had to swerve to avoid a cat.

Troopers say her truck slammed into a power pole, causing it to fall over the truck. The Clifton Fire Department arrived on the scene moments later and closed down 31 1/2 between I-70 and Mesa Avenue.

Xcel Energy showed up and secured the power pole until additional equipment was brought in to fix it.

The woman was cited for careless driving. The cat fled the scene, so troopers say they could not verify the woman's account of what happened.

Xcel says power in the area were not affected.
