UPDATE: Montrose County Coroner IDs shooter

The Montrose County Coroner has released the identity of the suspect who Montrose police believe shot three other officers.

11 News was the first to bring you news that the suspect is 52-year-old Dennis Gurney, the homeowner where it all happened.

The Coroner told 11 News that Gurney committed suicide the night he is believed to have shot and killed Montrose Police Sergeant David Kinternecht.

Gurney died from a single gunshot wound to the head and the Coroner tells us Gurney only suffered the one gun shot wound to the head and that he had no other wounds.

Gurney's family tells 11News he was badly burned in an oil rig accident in the 1980's.

On Saturday night police were called out to Gurney's home on 64.50 Road in Montrose on a report of a domestic dispute.

As police were talking to the person who called for help they say Gurney, who had barricaded himself in the garage, came out and shot three officers.

Officers Larry Witte and Rodney Ragsdale are recovering in the hospital.

Fifty two-year-old Gurney had been arrested at least five times for domestic violence according to the Colorado bureau of Investigation.

Documents 11 News pulled found the 52-year-old was first arrested by Montrose police on September 6, 2008.

He was charged with domestic violence, including third degree assault, harassment and obstructing a telephone.

In the two months that followed police nabbed him twice for violating protection orders.

In March of this year Gurney was arrested for failing to appear in court on that first domestic violence arrest.
