Frontier Airlines Holdings Inc. said Friday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Frontier Airlines Holdings Inc. said Friday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

It's a surprise - but good news for a Colorado air carrier.

Frontier Airlines has been successfully bid to Republic Airlines.

If Southwest won the bid, it was generally believed Frontier — and its animals —would disappear over the horizon.

With Republic — that wasn't the case.

A Frontier spokesman says the deal secures most of the airline's 5,000 jobs and keeps the company local.

Governor Bill Ritter says in this economy, this deal is a win.

No word yet on whether this will affect September's planned pullout of Frontier from Grand Junction Regional Airport.
