Students all across the western slope headed back to school today.

And that means your first assignment is to stay safe in school zones.

You’re reminded to be extra-careful when driving through school zones now that school is back in session.

The Police Department warns that it’s important to stay extra alert since we aren’t used to seeing kids on the streets.

If it helps stick in your head, here’s a reminder about what kind of tickets you could face if you’re caught speeding:
1-4 MPH: 0 points, $125.
5-9 MPH: 1 point, $125.
10-19 MPH: 4 points, $150.
20+ MPH: 6 points, court appearance.

Another quick reminder, when a bus stops, you need to follow the lights on the bus, and stop for it.

In addition to school zones, the GJPD says kids don’t just stick to school zones, so be careful of kids getting in and out of cars and riding their bikes on the street.
