Students in class. Richmond County must cut about $7.2 million from its already slim budget. (July 28, 2009 WRDW-TV)

On the first day of school, District 51 officials are keeping an eye on numbers.

They say they won’t know what enrollment looks like until after this week but are anticipating they will be about where they were last year.

The District says it has already taken steps to address overcrowding.

Two new modulars have been built at Rim Rock Elementary, some boundary shifting has taken place, and more teachers have been hired.
