After being closed for three decades, the Glade Park Community School opened its doors to students Wednesday.

It looks like any other first day of school.
A bus pulls up and children eagle to learn hop off.

But it’s not only the first day for students, it’s also the first day for the Glad Park Community School.

For the first time in 30 years children on Glade Park will be able to attend school close to home.

Diane Branham, parent of a Glade Park student says, “We're really happy today to see this beautiful school and thank everyone who supported us and District 51 to let kids go to school in their own community.”

For the past three years Diane and three others have been working hard with District 51 to bring education back home and it’s paid off.

The K-2 school will add a grade each year through fifth grade.

It will employ one teacher and full-time assistant.

So far, eight kids are enrolled.

“The curriculum is full District 51 standard with more hands-on learning. Like kids will go outside in the environment so it will be really cool,” Diane says.

The next step will be building a permanent facility and establishing a non-profit organization to help with school costs so there can be many more first days of school to come.

The land for the Glade Park Community School is being leased to the School District.
