Grand Junction, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado State Patrol says Robert Habliston, a retired trooper who rose to the No. 2 position in the patrol, has died in a motorcycle wreck.

The 70-year-old Habliston died Saturday when he collided with another motorcyclist on U.S. 550 in Ouray County. The patrol says Habliston was braking to avoid three vehicles that were stopped to turn left but lost control.

The patrol says Habliston and the other motorcyclist, 50-year-old Bruce Demaree of New River, Ariz., were thrown from their bikes. Demaree was taken to a hospital. His condition wasn't available.

Habliston joined the patrol in 1965 and was district commander in Grand Junction from 1980 to 1992. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel, the second-highest position, in 1994. He retired that year.
