A rollover accident on Interstate 70 near Palisade sent two women to the hospital and closed the eastbound lanes of the highway for more than an hour Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the accident happened just after 2 p.m. Troopers say two women were in an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed when they tried to pass another vehicle on a 50 mph curve.

The driver lost control of the SUV and it rolled three times coming to a rest on its roof. One woman was ejected during the crash and another had to be extricated according to the Palisade Fire Department.

Officials believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and say it doesn't appear the women were wearing seat belts.

At this time its unknown what injuries the women suffered. They were taken to an area hospital.

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash.
