A Nucla High School science teacher has been arrested on pornography related charges.
Fifty-year-old Thomas Helmbrecht was arrested by Montrose County Sheriff's Deputies after an arrest warrant was served at his home. He is facing charges of sexual exploitation of a child and possessing sexually exploitative material.
According to the West End School District’s Superintendent Steven Yost, Helmbrecht has been a teacher at Nucla High School for a little over two years and is now on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
The school district says it is cooperating with the Montrose Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office. Yost says the district's first course of action is always to protect the children and staff at any of its schools.
Yost says he is not aware of any incidence involving Helmbrecht and any of the school’s students.
Helmbrecht appeared in court on Thursday for a bond hearing. According to the Daily Press report the District Attorney's office told the judge, "The defendant admitted to ongoing possession of use of (sexually exploitative material) for five years," and referred to numerous sexually explicit photos investigators found in his home.
Helmbrecht's bond is set $10,000 and he is not allowed to have contact with any females under the age of 18 and is required to see a clinical psychologist.
