The Grand Junction Police Department says a man is in custody after he drove his SUV through the front of a local liquor store.

That crash happened around 8:30pm Sunday at the Country Club Liquors store located off Horizon Drive in the Safeway Shopping Center.

Officials say a man plowed his SUV through the front of the store, taking out doors and knocking over several shelves of alcohol. They say by the time officers arrived, he had backed up and driven off.

Officers say witnesses were able to provide police with a good description of the vehicle and one even followed the SUV as it fled the scene.

Police eventually caught up to the man in a field near the La Quinta Inn on Crossroads Blvd. Officials say he appeared to be intoxicated. The man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and charges of hit and run and criminal mischief. His name has not been released at this time.

Officials are estimating damage to the store at $40,000. Officers say when they walked inside, there was about an inch of liquid covering the floor.
