An overnight fire at a local business may have been small, but officials say it sure packed a punch.
The Grand Junction Fire Department was called out to the Bellco Credit Union on Highway 6&50 just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday on reports that flames and smoke were coming from the roof.
Officials say firefighters found a large A/C unit on top of the building on fire and quickly put it out.
They say that type of A/C unit is very expensive -- so while there was only minor smoke and water damage to most of the building, total damage is estimated into the six-figure range.
"We're probably overestimating the amount of damage but it really could pretty easily get to one-hundred thousand dollars," says Mike Page, Public Information Officer for the Grand Junction Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials say it appears to be the result of a mechanical failure.
No one was inside the building, which is still being renovated for the soon-to-open credit union.
