Governor Bill Ritter declared Wednesday ‘Colorado Proud’ school meal day.
He’s encouraging schools to use Colorado produce in the meals they served.
The goal is to help support local agriculture and to educate students about healthy eating.
School District 51 is proud to be part of the program and says it buys watermelons, star fruit, cantaloupe and apples from two Grand Valley growers.
Last year District 51 served nearly 16,000 pounds of local fresh fruit.
This year, they’ll buy around 20,000 pounds.
