GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - School District 51 has just announced Nisley Elementary school will be closed starting Thursday and will reopen Monday due to illness.
The School will be closed Thursday to help stop the spread of the illness and school was scheduled to be out Friday, Oct. 16 due to a teacher workday. All other activities and services within the building have also been canceled.
During the closure the District says the school will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as a number of student are out with a flu-like illness.
In a statement the District says the decision to close the school was made by the District and the Mesa County Health Department after talking with the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. They say it was based on the following:
-excessive absenteeism among students
-large number of children visiting the school health office and being sent home with a documented fever
-school not being able to keep potentially infectious individuals out of the building
Officials say when students show up for class Monday they'll be screened to tell if they're well enough to stay. Anyone too sick to stay will be sent home.
Parents are being asked to keep children home Monday and any other day if they're sick. They should be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medication.
