GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - A Grand Junction man has changed his plea to guilty in a deadly crash that killed a young woman and her infant daughter and injured her husband.

Twenty–year-old Derrick Maxfield had entered a not guilty plea but changed that in court Monday.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide in the death of Shandi Boetel and her daughter Natalia, child abuse resulting in death and DUI.

Police say Maxfield had been playing drinking games and taking shots before he got in the car and crashed into Boetel’s truck on North Avenue in late January.

He’s scheduled to be sentenced in early January 2010.

What good will a jail sentence do in this case? A young man made a horrible mistake that cost 2 lives, but jail is not the answer. Taking a productive person out of society and placing them in a prison environment does not work. He does deserve to be punished, but there are other ways. God Bless all involved!!
