A local shoe store owner is getting national honors. Bruce Benge of Benge's shoes was named the small business champion of the year. The award is given by the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
Federation representatives say Benge is a voice of small business on the western slope, as well as a go to for small business issues in health care. Benge says the award is a suprise and a great honor. "I kept on waiting for the other shoe to drop and they were going to ask me for money but it turned out to be in recognition of years of service and views on what's going on around the world and the country today," says Benge.
Benge sits on 30 civic organizations, ranging from health care to children's groups to arts and cultural organizations. His store, Benge's shoes, located on main street, is a third generation downtown location and has been in business for 98 years...
