GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - After months of public hearings and debate, the Mesa State Associated Student Government has approved a new smoking policy for the college.

Current campus policy states that students are not allowed to smoke or use other tobacco products in any buildings or dorms at the college. The new policy will also require smokers to stand at least 40 feet away from the entrance of any building on campus when smoking or using tobacco products.

Student leaders say the issue was first brought to their attention after many students complained about breathing in second-hand smoke and smokers throwing cigarette butts all over campus.

They say this final policy reflects their effort to satisfy both smokers and non-smokers.

The policy must now be approved by the Mesa State Board of Trustees before it can take effect.
