DETROIT, Mich. (NBC)- A man was put in custody Friday after he allegedly tried to blow up a plane as it was landing in Detroit.
White House officials say it was an attempted act of terrorism and airline security in the U.S. is on heightened alert.
There were 278 passengers onboard the plane when a 23 year Nigerian national allegedly tried to detonate an explosive device and instead caught himself on fire.
Fellow travelers and flight attendants quickly restrained the suspect.
The crew requested law enforcement to meet them on the ground.
Officials say the suspect departed Nigeria late Thursday to Amsterdam where he boarded the Delta Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit.
The suspects name reportedly appeared in a database of possible terrorist suspects.
