Clifton, Colo. (KKCO)- A house fire leaves one dead and two taken to hospital.

Between the hours of 3 and 4 AM Saturday morning, the Clifton Fire Department responded to a house fire. When they arrived on scene, the bedroom closest to the street was in flames. After putting the fire out, the fire department found the body of 45 year-old man.

"At this point, we have no idea as to the cause of the fire. We have a room of origin, but that's basically all we have at this point," says Doug Lucas, Investigations Coordinator for Grand Junction Fire Department.

When the fire broke out, the victim's wife and son were also in the home. The wife opened the door to the bedroom to find her husband still alive and engulfed in flames. By the time she was able reach the fire extinguisher and get her son to help, she says her husband was dead.

The fire department says six chihuahuas were inside the home at the time of the fire. All made it out safely, but one. While Mesa County Coroners Office does an autopsy to figure out a cause of death, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and fire investigators are looking to see how the fire started in the first place.

The fire is still under investigation. Tune into 11 News at ten to hear from the widow.
