GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Have you ever wondered how your hard earned tax dollars are being spent? Sunday, the state launched a one-of-a-kind Web site to give you a better idea.
It's hardly a new concept, government using the Internet to list funds collected and funds spent for the sake of being "transparent." But State Treasurer Cary Kennedy says she wanted to take that idea and build on it.
"This Web site takes it a step further," said Kennedy. "This feature allows the individual taxpayer to see what are they personally spending on these services."
Sunday, the Colorado Department of Treasury launched its "Tax Tracks" Web site, an interactive tool that gives individual citizens a "to the penny" breakdown of what they pay in taxes and consequently state services.
"We all can take a look at what we buy at a grocery store or at a mall and make a determination, are we getting a good value for our dollar?" said Kennedy. "And we wanted to provide that same information with respect to how public taxpayer money is being used."
Using your annual income, the site breaks down what you spend on nearly 100 functions of government, things like clean drinking water inspections, public education funding and road repairs.
"This Web site is the first of its kind in the country," said Kennedy.
The site also allows users to vote on whether they agree with how the state's fund are collected and spent.
"Over time, we'll see are there a lot of people out there saying they think we should be spending more on a particular program or should be spending less on a particular service," said Kennedy.
Just another tool, she says, to provide taxpayers with information they deserve to know.
"We can't be accountable to the taxpayers unless we're completely transparent in how funds are used," said Kennedy.
