GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The School District 51 board adopted the five-day extended year calendar model for the 2013/2014 school year.

The new calendar means students will have less time off during the summer but a couple of longer breaks during the year, and district board members say the increase in contact days could bump up student performance.

Students will get a two week break in the fall as well as in the spring.

Superintendent Steve Shultz said the time off can be used for intervention learning for kids falling behind.

"Moving to a more balanced calendar that spreads learning throughout the year-- along with important extensions to learning and interventions to learning for students that might need additional support or challenge-- is something we want to strive for," said Shultz.

The exact start date, break dates and end of the year date have not been set in stone.

Board members said they want to get community input and information from CMU about holidays before laying out the timeline.

The new calendar will take effect in the fall of 2013.
