GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- After a season of preparation, the Western Slope Special Olympic athletes take on bowling at Orchard Mesa Lanes.

The annual event lasted through the afternoon with singles, doubles and team bowling. About 240 athletes from Grand Junction, Montrose, Delta and Cortez gathered to compete for the chance to bowl at the state competition in November.

"What we have are sanctioned Special Olympic ribbons, and they are status quo across the nation. Medals are given at state competitions," said Julie Fite with the Western Slope Special Olympics.

Participants are matched against their opponents based on gender, qualifying score and age to ensure a fair and legitimate competition.

Thirty to 40 athletes will qualify to move on to the state competition in Lakewood in November, but the trip can be costly, so for many, today's competition will sum up their efforts this season.
