GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – From shelter to service dogs- a new campaign is set to hit Colorado to raise awareness for a new program to turn pups and people’s lives around.

Freedom Service Dogs of America is a non-profit organization with a mission to turn rescue dogs into service animals. The marketing campaign has received $75,000 donation from a Denver-based communications company and plans on showcasing ads all over the state in hopes they will raise awareness.

“I love it- that is so exciting. There are so many dogs that I work with on a daily basis that I think this animal would make a great therapy dog,” said Beth McIntyre, the Early Training Program Coordinator at Tiara Rado Animal Hospital.

According to McIntyre, rescue dogs may be the best candidates for service dog training.

“If they’ve been through something traumatic they have a different kind of a bond with somebody. And they are so intuitive and so emotional,” explains McIntyre.

It’s a win-win situation for the animals being rescued and for the people the dogs will be trained to service.

“They have that desire to want to pay it back to the people who have helped them,” said McIntyre.

Local resident Kourtnei Weinischke adopted her lab and has made him a part of the community.

“He’s a K-9 good citizen so what that means is he has good manners for the most part and he’s able to sit there while people pet him,” said Weinischke.

The ad campaign will feature rescue dogs on busses, billboards and at dog parks- statewide and in Mesa County. The non-profit organization hopes to help shelter dogs and the community.

“It’ll help a lot of people out and it’ll help the dogs,” said local Chrissy Grace.
