GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The woman who police say was assaulted downtown by a CMU football player speaks out for the first time.

Chelsea Gallagher sat in her hospital room Sunday afternoon, recounting the events that led to her hospitalization and the arrest of the CMU athlete Shane Williams, who is accused of assaulting her.

Gallagher says it started as an argument when she, her girlfriend and some other friends were leaving the Red Room on First Avenue early Friday morning.

"Going outside to leave, is when they started kind of making comments about us being gay and saying that Ashley looked like a boy and stuff," said Gallagher.

And that's the last thing she remembers.

She apparently has no memory of the 15 minutes before and after she regained consciousness from her head injury.

Chelsea's girlfriend, Ashley Davis, filled in some of the gaps.

"I got kind of testy with him as well. It started out as just an argument," said Davis.

Davis said a man named Dakota was yelling homophobic slurs at the four women.

"Me and Dakota ended up in a little bit of a scuffle, some pushing and what not,” said Davis. “I guess he had me in a head lock, and at this time I think Chelsea was trying to break us up."

That's when witnesses said Shane Williams got physical.

"My roommate said that he picked me up by the waste and slammed me down on the ground."

The alleged attack resulted in a fractured skull, bleeding from the ear and an extended stay at the ICU for Gallagher.

While Davis said he was probably standing up for his friend, Williams used more force than necessary.

"I don't think he meant to do what he did, but it did happen,” said Davis. “So I’m not making excuses for him and his actions whatsoever."

Gallagher could not explain it either.

"I don't know what would make him go that extreme,” said Gallagher. “Being my height and my weight and stuff, it would not take much to get me away."

Williams was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of second degree assault, possessing a fake ID and underage drinking.

Gallagher will stay in the hospital until tomorrow to make sure the swelling in her brain has gone down.

Shane Williams declined to comment on the story. He's now out on bond. Official charges will be announced this Thursday.

No word from CMU on whether any disciplinary action will be taken.
