GRAND JUNCTION, Co (KKCO) - Atheists are one of the fastest growing groups in the country. According to recent surveys, not believing in god is becoming more accepted in the United States.
"There are a lot of people who have been disappointed by religion", says Michael Chase, Senior Pastor at Northeast Christian Church.
While leaving religion may be out of the question for some, Judith Sirota, President of the Western Colorado Atheists and Freethinkers says many aren't scared at all.
"We don't believe in a super natural power. We believe we are responsible for what happens in our lives", she says.
Pastor Chase says he has seen a growing trend in Atheism and attributes it to social and political changes.
"I think part of it is that culturally we've moved away from moral bases that we used to have as a nation; that were pretty much universally accepted within our own nation", he explains.
Sirota says many of her members have come questioning religion. She says the group has ex-Christians, ex-Jews and the like.
"We welcome anybody who questions there beliefs or questions what is going on in the world in the name of religion", she says.
Though atheism may not have a big following in Mesa County, it certainly is an option for some.
The local free thinkers meet the first Sunday of every month at the Mesa Mall's community room.
