UPDATE: Man suffers gunshot wound to the head

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A man is rushed to the hospital after suffering an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. Saturday. The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says deputies found the wounded male when they attempted a traffic stop on 29 Road and Pinyon.

“The vehicle pulled over, and the driver jumped out of the car yelling that his passenger had been shot. We contacted the passenger who had blood on him. The passenger told us himself that he shot himself,” Deputy Ben Carnes said.

Authorities are still trying to determine if the shooting was accidental. They say the victim was breathing and talking when they took him to the hospital.

Crews were dispatched to the area of 29 Road and Pinyon around 8:15 p.m. Saturday.
