Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) --- School will be back in session in just over two weeks and the Salvation Army is helping several Grand Valley residents get their kids ready.
Each year the Salvation Army puts together hundreds of backpacks full of school supplies for students here in Mesa County.
The event serves to support local students who may not have the same access to school supplies as some of their peers.
"The reality is some of the students have a tough time some of the families have a tough time economically," says Salvation Army Commanding Officer, Dan Wilson. "We've gone by the lists from the different school systems and got the basic items from the different school lists for the middle school and high school since that's today and those basic items from the school lists, we've put in the backpacks."
The annual program has expanded greatly over the past few years, helping students from kindergarten all of the way through high school.
Inside of the backpacks, students received everything from a water bottle, tissues and mouthwash to folders, pens and note cards.
They will continue handing out backpacks to elementary school students on Monday.
