GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. It's the kind of weather that puts you in the holiday spirit, but as arctic temperatures and snow are forecast to be in the valley for the rest of the week, it's important to beware of the icy conditions on the roadways.

It's our first heavy snowfall of the season and residents like Mario Calderone were happy to wake up to a backyard blanketed in snow.

"I think it's pretty cool, I like snow. I like the six inches of snow that's in my backyard, it will be around for a while," said Calderone.

It was business as usual for Calderone at his downtown shoe repair shop, however, snowfall for the City of Grand Junction means working around the clock.

"We have eight trucks running today and we had eight last night. We started at midnight last night," said Dan Thorne, the Grand Junction Maintenance Supervisor.

The city is in full force, plowing roads and salting streets.

"We're gonna have some ice on the roads, we're gonna have those crews put salt down, although that only works until about 15 degrees and we're gonna try to get the slush off as much as we can," says Thorne.

But despite their efforts, road conditions may still be tough for drivers, as freezing temperatures roll in, the roadways become layered with ice.

"It's gonna be kind of a black ice. I don't want anybody to be fooled that it's an open road type thing. They need to realize it's still slick out there," said Thorne.

If you have to drive during ice conditions, city officials have a word of advice.

"Cars are going to have to drive slow for the morning work rush," said Thorne.

The City of Grand Junction also says they have enough funds to cover this snowstorm and any storms that may hit the valley before the end of the year.
