Rifle, Colo. (KKCO) --- Just days after officials announced that the Ward Gulch fire was completely contained, another fire is burning in Rifle Gap State Park.

The Brush Creek fire is approximately 400 acres and about 10 miles north of Rifle.

With fires burning across the state, resources are low. Eight engines and two helicopters along with one Hot Shot Crew, one type 2 and one type 2 1A crew are battling the blaze on very steep, rocky terrain.

Fortunately, no structures are currently threatened and no evacuations have been ordered for residents in the area.

With no rain in sight, high winds and dry, hot temperatures are making matters worse for firefighters.

"It actually probably ignited 4 or 5 days ago during a lightning storm," says Brush Creek Fire PIO, Glenn Adams. "It sat there in the duff and creeped around and we never saw the smoke from it."

UPDATE 11:13 p.m.
Rifle, Colo. (KKCO) --- Firefighters are working to contain the fire in a rugged part of Garfield County.

Steep slopes and heavy fuels in timber make containment difficult on the Brush Creek Fire near Rifle Gap State Park.

This 400 acre fire is close to the border between BLM and the White River National Forest boundary. Approximately 10 miles north of Rifle.

The fire is 30% contained. These burning conditions are expected to last into next week.

UPDATE 8:45 a.m.

The fire is now four miles north of Rifle Gap State Park, adjacent to Middle Rifle Creek.

It remains at 30% containment and is currently burning about 405 acres.

Officials say objectives for this afternoon are as follows:

1. Ensure the safety of all firefighters and the public
2. Complete the construction of a fireline around the fire with an emphasis on the northern end. Mopping up will begin on the flanks of the fire.

Current resources include three engines, six hand crews, one air attack, two type one helicopters, one type two helicopter and one type three helicopter.

There are still no residences in jeopardy at this time and Rifle Gap Reservoir remains partially closed to boating.
