GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A controlled burn doesn't stay that way Monday afternoon.
The Lower Valley Fire Department was called to a weed fire that got out of control near J and 22 roads around 1:30 p.m.
Lower Valley Fire Captain Gene Holder says the property owner who was burning brush probably did not have enough water, so when the winds shifted and blew the fire into a nearby wash, he couldn't put it out alone.
Two brush trucks and one water tender helped firefighters keep the flames from nearby structures. They say it burned between three to five acres.
Firefighters want to remind residents that if you plan to burn material on your property, make sure you have enough manpower and water to keep it under control.
