Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) --- The Western Colorado Auto Theft Task Force launched their summer educational campaign to help locals learn about ways to prevent their cars from getting broken into.
Sergeant Jeff Byrne with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office said in 2012, 291 car thefts were reported in Mesa County and 125 of those cars were either unlocked, the keys were left inside of the vehicle, or both.
Tips to keep your car safe are simple:
• Lock your doors
• Roll up your windows
• Remove all valuables from plain sight
• Do not leave your keys in the car
July is National Auto Theft Awareness month and educating yourself now will prevent you from becoming another statistic.
