Central High School released from lockdown

CLIFTON, Colo. (KKCO)—Central High School is all clear after it was locked down due to an incident in the area.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Heather Benjamin says around 10:30 a.m., someone spotted a gun sitting inside a vehicle near the school. The person alerted authorities, and deputies decided to call for a school lockdown as a precaution, according to Benjamin.

Deputies have not been able to locate the vehicle, but they believe it moved away from the school, so the campus transitioned to shelter-in-place at 10:45 a.m. It was then completely cleared at 11 a.m.

Benjamin says it’s not necessarily illegal to have a gun lying in your car. She reminds residents that it is hunting season.

Law enforcement officers are still looking for the vehicle to verify if the gun owner is legally allowed to have it.

No threats were made to the school, students or staff.

Knee-jerk over reaction. A gun not on school property is not the business of a high school student or the school administration. This is nothing more than fear mongering by the liberal gun control advocates that permeate the teachers union.

We need to fire all of District 51. Who is the "idiot" who came up with this policy? My God I was at Jerry’s and there were guns everywhere, lock down the valley! Numbskulls. Tell me how a gun constitutes a traffic stop? It is our Constitutional Right to keep and bear arms, which are to me, the illegal act is done by the “police” who are harassing the citizens of Colorado, with illegal stops.
