GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Around 500 friends, family and co-workers gathered to remember a beloved Grand Junction Police Department commander - Gregory M. Assenmacher.

He passed away on Tuesday, January 29th after collapsing at his home while exercising. His death was unexpected, and his loved ones spent a beautiful afternoon honoring the man who made a huge impact on not only his family, but the entire community.

"Obviously people are reeling from the loss of such an incredible guy, especially such an untimely death," said Chief John Camper, GJPD, "but on the other hand, it was all and all kind of an upbeat ceremony and a chance to laugh a little bit in between the tears."

Fifty-four-year-old Gregory Assenmacher has left a legacy at the Grand Junction Police Department.

"I worked with Greg for 30 years in many different capacities here at the department, and also as a friend outside the organization," said fellow commander Mike Nordine.

On Monday, hundreds honored his life and his 32 years of dedication to this city.

"We weren't surprised at the turnout," said John. "Greg just had an incredible reputation in town. He's really, I think, the face of the Grand Junction Police Department to a great extent."

More than that, he was known throughout the community as a loving father, caring husband, wise mentor, and so much more.

"The biggest thing about Greg is he was very much about people and relationships," said Mike, "and I think we can all learn an awful lot."

"He was involved in everything," said John. "His sense of volunteerism and his commitment to the citizens of this comunity and making sure that this is the most professional police department it could possibly be was just incredible. He's a guy that's just irreplacable."

And now, everyone touched by his life can look back and know that Commander Gregory M. Assenmacher left his mark in the world.
