MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- February's unemployment numbers have been released.

The Mesa County Workforce Center reports that last month, Mesa County's unemployment rate sat at 9.1 percent, a slight drop from January's 9.2 percent.

Business Services Manager Suzie Miller says that is a good sign if you look at the bigger picture. In February 2012, the jobless rate was 9.3 percent, and the year before that, 11.5 percent of residents were out of work.

According to Miller, Mesa County had an increase in its overall labor force from January to February, meaning that more people are counting themselves as looking for work.

The workforce center currently has 214 open job orders.

The state's unemployment rate dropped to 7.2 percent in February from January's 7.3 percent, says the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. The rate hasn't been this low since 2009.

According to the department, the largest gains were in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, trade, transportation and utilities.

The agency said Friday that employers in Colorado reported 10,800 more nonfarm payroll jobs from January to February for a total of 2.35 million jobs.

During the same period, the national unemployment rate dropped two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.7 percent.
