Coroner identifies skeleton found near Gateway

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- A 1987 missing person case has been solved after a man's remains are discovered near Gateway.

The Mesa County Coroner Dean Havlik says the skeleton found last Thursday in John Brown Canyon is that of Ronald Vasey, who disappeared in 1987 when he was 65-years-old.

Hikers discovered his remains in a partly buried car that matched the description of Vasey's, according to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office. Investigators found credit cards and other effects that helped them identify the body.

Havlik said before he disappeared, Vasey had made suicidal threats and attempts so all evidence points to suicide as his cause of death.
